Chiropractic Treatments

Chiropractors are trained to diagnose, treat and manage conditions that are due to problems with the joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles and nerves of the whole body, including the spine, back and neck. A variety of treatment techniques are used; all of which are designed to improve the function of joints and reduce muscle spasm, pain and improving movement.

Following completion of a five year degree course, chiropractors are primary health care professionals and are classified as key workers (provide a service essential to the community). As a private chiropractor it means that you do not need to be referred by your GP prior to seeking treatment. Should the chiropractic treatment not be a suitable option for you, you will be referred to another appropriate health care practitioner.

The effectiveness of chiropractic treatment is well supported by research as well as by various UK government and medical organisations. Chiropractic treatment is included in the NICE (National Institute of Clinical Excellence) guidelines for musculoskeletal conditions.

In common with medical practitioners and dentists, chiropractors must be registered by law. The statutory body that regulates and governs the profession is the General Chiropractic Council (GCC) and it is illegal to practise as a chiropractor without being registered. Diane Chaplin has been registered since 2011 with the GCC.

SOT Chiropractic Treatments

Sacro-Occipital Technique (SOT) is a specialist chiropractic method requiring additional training which is concerned with normalising the relationship between the sacrum, the base of the spine and the occiput at the base of the skull. SOT treatment itself is particularly gentle; the weight of the body itself is used in specific positions to make pelvic joint corrections. SOT produces lasting results in a short time; these include reduced pain along with improved function in all parts of the body. Since the body is functioning better, many patients report improved general health and feelings of well-being.

The cranial bones and other cranial structures can cause problems that are often overlooked. Correction of musculoskeletal tissue tension around the major organs may also be treated. SOT integrates easily with other chiropractic techniques and a SOT chiropractor will often use several different techniques and approaches simultaneously. Patients can also expect to receive advice regarding nutrition, lifestyle and ergonomics.

What can be treated?

When spinal joints are out of alignment or not functioning properly they can irritate the spinal nerves causing pain, joint stiffness or muscle spasms in many areas of the body. Chiropractic care is a natural approach to spinal and joint health that aims to treat the underlying cause of the symptoms so that it does not keep recurring. This may be as a result of an accident or fall, but everyday activities such as prolonged sitting, repeated bending, lifting and twisting can also be a cause of back problems.

General age-related wear and tear can also affect the smooth functioning of the joints in the spine. Chiropractic care can help to alleviate the pain associated with this poor function and, as part of your treatment programme, you will receive advice on ways to help to prevent the recurrence of such problems.

A Biomechanical assessment of your strength, balance and flexibility determines any weaknesses and imbalances in your posture and various muscle groups that may be causing your injury. This will accurately diagnose the correct treatment for you.
